 Sighting and Snorquel with the Whale Shark

The Bahía de la Paz is officially considered a refuge for the Whale Shark, so according to the official nom (Semarnat) NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

In order to guarantee the conservation of the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), protect its habitat and contribute to its sustainable development, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources published the Agreement establishing the refuge area called Bahía de Peace.

This area has an area of 22,749.08 hectares and is located in the south of Baja California Sur from the coastline that starts from San Juan de la Costa, in the north, and up to the entrance to the La Paz cove, between the Punta de El Mogote and the boardwalk of La Paz.

The Bay of La Paz is considered the largest and deepest coastal body of water in the Gulf of California and, due to its high productivity and abundance of natural resources, it is the habitat of eighty species of fish, sixty elasmobranchs (sharks and manta rays), four of pinnipeds, eleven of whales and two of cetaceans. source: Semarnat.

The Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection Area in the Bay of La Paz in Baja California Sur is an iconic Natural Protected Area deeply rooted for the population of La Paz. The Balandra estuary contains the largest mangroves in the entire Bahía de la Paz, they cover an area of more than 50 hectares and have the northernmost distribution in the American Continent. These mangroves are essential for the continuity of the regional ecology and provide habitat for various species of algae, marine invertebrates and fish that are part of a wide food web. In its terrestrial portions, the APFF Balandra presents more than 150 species of plants, highlighting the presence of several endemic to this area.
